Spring brings the lowest tides of the year and the opportunity to dig for geoducks. Think of something that looks similar to the horse clams of a previous post but larger and with a neck that is 2-3 feet long. Not sure what I would do with a clam that big but figured that is only a problem if we got one.
We headed back out to Dosewallips campground for a couple days to search for Washington's largest clam. We even managed to convince six other folks to join us for the hunt. I figured the toughest part would be digging down three feet in the mud while trying to keep the hole from collapsing... turns out just spotting one was beyond our abilities. The low tides made for very interesting sight seeing but Duckabush beach yielded no geoducks.
The oysters and steamer clams made for a good consolation prize. We all escaped with only minor cuts from shucking but Oak was tender footing it for most of this week. Kat even managed to keep down a raw oyster, a masterful performance that was completely devoid of the drama I was anticipating.
We cooked up the steamers for dinner on a brand new camp stove because I forgot to bring one and using utensils provided by friends because I forgot those too... This probably marked the last time I will be allowed to pack the car without adult supervision but for the record I did remember a dozen different tools and accessories for clamming.
