Two weekends back we ventured on a day trip to visit the most scenic location for a refinery in the states. Well actually that is just a perk on the drive to Whidbey Island but the view is pretty awesome from the town of Anacortes. The Tesoro and Shell refineries sit just to the right of these oil tankers. Mt Baker (active volcano) which made its debut in my Salmon Slam post is in the background.
From Anacortes we worked our way south driving up Mt Erie and then crossing Deception Pass onto Whidbey Island.
Ebey's landing is an interesting mix of state park and national historic preserve which covers a large chunk of active agricultural land as well the scenic park areas. Ebey was one of the earliest settlers (pre-Seattle) and he managed to find a natural basin for farming, with no trees to clear and only 18 inches of rain per year. The views in the pictures below were what this lucky guy got to look at every morning until his luck ran out and he got caught in a retaliatory raid by a semi-local tribe.
