Saturday's Dig
Luckily I do not have an endorsed guiding license because it would surely be confiscated by now. Last Saturday we tricked Prof Gardener into joining us for a visit to Grays Harbor and some clam digging. The tidal conditions weren't great and there was a pretty good storm blowing in right about the same time as the low tide but I did the logical thing and filled Prof Gardener's head with tales of clamming glory.
I got a couple pictures of the crowds before the rain hit but then the camera had to go into lock down. Sadly the wind did a great job of keeping the water on top of the clam beds and a healthy film of brown algae blocked any attempts at underwater digging. Kat and Prof Gardener both came out with three clams while Sensei and I only got two apiece... I was too ashamed to even try a picture of the catch.
Tuesday's Dig
Round two shared nothing in common with Saturday's debacle except that Sensei and I headed to the same stretch of beach. This time we walked in from the Iron Springs Resort and onto the Copalis State Airport. Fortunately no TSA agents were present to take away our clam guns.
The tide was out and the water was clear. We could tap a single time and have five different clams show. I took the opportunity to grab my first limit with a clam shovel. Its humbling to be out maneuvered by a clam but eventually I caught onto their tricks. The shovel crowd has one more convert, its much gentler on my old man back... These clams were monsters, I think by mass they were almost twice the size of the other digs this year. Awesome day to be out on the beach and I wish some of our fellow sufferers from Saturday could have experienced the feel of the deserted beach where your only trouble was picking which clam show looked biggest.
