The lamest of titles for one of the most beautiful lakes in the world but I intend to make a yearly pilgrimage to pay my respects so stay tuned for Baker Lake - 2056 (a geriatric's guide to fishing for robot sockeye via kayak drone)! This year we loaded down the Forester with all the toys for a three night stint with good company and no cellphone reception:
Prof Gardener on his paddleboard getting an early start and shaming even the kayakers |
The one sockeye came before we had even finished our first trolling pass and he was leaping and ripping through the water so fast that I was sure he would slip the hook. The Baker sockeye stay out to sea longer than their Columbia based cousins and this makes them significantly larger. It took a good hour for my hands and nerves to settle down. Moral was high in the fleet but sadly that was the end of the action for the weekend...
The youngest of our party was a sharp eyed judge of my filleting technique |
After the responsible adults had headed back to the real world, the wife and I headed up into the hills for a hike up Shannon Ridge. The hound kicked up quite a few grouse and it was an 8 berry hike (new record)! Had to turn back at the Olympic National Park boundary but the views from the top are worth the visit.
