October Fishing Reports (Condensed Version)

Urban Outcast Music Discovery, Song #4, Yellow Backed Fly by Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers (An actual fishing song)

October is the peak of the salmon season, at least theoretically. This year we are running about 3x above average for rain and the rivers have been blown out (fish nerd term) for most of the month. Here are a couple updates from when the conditions were cooperating. I intended this to be a quick post but poured too much Baileys in my tea and even more in the second cup... which broke the blabbing filter. My apologies for the lack of self control.

Chehalis - The leaves were changing but my luck is steadfast and I walked away empty handed (expect for the great fall scenery above).

Humptulips, Day 1 - The fish were flying up river and although the water was still a little too high and cloudy I convinced one coho buck to play along and ended up with 4 pounds of smoked salmon!! Even better, Sensei got skunked and I could bring that up at every mile marker on the drive back to town.

I haven't really touched on fishing tackle before but I was excited to land this fish with a blending of a pink Vibrax spinner (size 5) with a white and pink hoochie from my sockeye gear. If those nouns mean nothing to you, do not worry, that just means you are normal.

Humptulips, Day 2 - The conditions were ideal and everyone in the Harbor knew it... The same spot that we had mostly to ourselves the evening before was packed with ten guys. Some fish were being landed but I couldn't find the right combination. I settled for watching the herons work the shallows for fish and the shore for unguarded salmon eggs of the fishermen on the bank.

In my drive to get away from the crowds I found where a dedicated fisherman of above average height could creep across the entire river to a patch of water where the salmon were relaxing in peace. Sadly, it was getting too dark to take advantage but next year I will be ready to stand right where that heron is hanging out.
