The biennial pilgrimage to South Dakota to pay respect to the mighty pheasant started with a 20 hour drive that tests the fitness of the posterior muscles. This year we had a little extra time to explore and opted for a side trip to Devils Tower in the northeast corner of Wyoming.
Very fortunate timing to catch the super moon rise even if it looks pitiful in the pics |
My favorite story from the tower's history regards the honorary Darwin award candidate George Hopkins, who in October of 1941 parachuted to the top of tower on a $50 bet. The 500 foot rope he intended to climb down with did not make the landing. He spent 6 days and 5 nights pondering why wagers and alcohol do not mix before an alpine team rescued him.
More South Dakota stories to come if I survive a week in Iowa... Belated Happy Turkey Day!
