Damon Point

July is a slower month for fishing in the Harbor so I braved the withdrawal symptoms and left the rods in the garage. Instead I packed the camera and went scouting for future fishing spots. Progress? First stop was Damon Point, rumored by some local Russians to be a good surf perch spot. Its a 4 miles loop around a big sand spit and I recovered a pyramid weight so I know somebody was trying for perch. Once you clear the first half mile of crabbers and beach combers you get the whole place to yourself.
There used to be a road out to the point but sounds like it was just too much trouble to maintain with the shifting sands. Below you can see how much things have changed since 1990 (Damon Point is on the north, Westport and the big jetty to the south).
After scarfing my Thai food on the beach, I headed a little west to see if the Ocean Shores jetty has the potential to be a rival lingcod/sea bass to the default Westport rock hope. Nope, too short/shallow for getting into the bigger fish but it was a good perch for watching the sunset and the premature fireworks.
Couple more shots from a failed crabbing expedition to the Westport finger jetties. Lots of free time to try to figure out the camera. That Waterworld looking ship is the dredger that comes in every summer.
