March 4th, 2022 - 8.5 miles & 3,250' gain: Oak and I returned to I-90 to visit Mt Washington, a trail we had done in 2017 but without any of the white stuff. The view we were hoping for would look something like this:
While it was blue skies for a good portion of the hike, what we ended up with at the summit this time was a little less dramatic:But I'm getting ahead of myself, we still had two hours of walking and sawing to reach the summit. This trail was the debut of a new trail saw that I had purchased after I got tired of carrying around a bow saw on trails that ended up being clean. No worries on that front with this trip, the trail was crisscrossed just yards after you turned off the road.
The saw unfurled from its simple bar shape into a surprisingly decent cutter and handled everything we came across except the cluster below (trail ran just to the right of the waterfall).
After the first couple miles you get into some cool cliffs and overhangs. All very civilized though as this stretch is an old timber road.
At about 1,000' below the summit the snow situation changed pretty dramatically and the open slopes were an awesome return to a winter wonderland.
What I really didn't like was walking the narrow slot through the trees as the trail side hilled up to the summit. I have very limited winter hiking experience but this was the only time so far that I had my doubts about staying on the trail. I shouldn't have been too concerned because I would splat into a tree or two, immediately arresting my slide.
Overall, a very pleasant hike and it looks especially appealing now as I'm hiding in the basement to avoid the August heat.
