Victoria, BC

Urban Outcast Music #56 - Lighthouse by William Prince. Normally I try to avoid repeating an artist so quickly but William was having an outdoor concert right on the harbor the night we arrived and as soon as the kids were going to bed, I rushed over and got to hear two hours coming over the fence. In fact the sign below was a great place for listening.
August 28, 2022: The last time our youngest was in Canada, he was just an embryo road tripping to Calgary. For his first real international trip, we headed to Victoria, BC via the MV Coho, a ferry built in Seattle in 1959 and the original interior to show for it. I'll touch on a few of the highlights from the trip but this is mostly a post for the grandparents who will appreciate lots of kiddo pictures. No dramatic adventures or challenging hikes, just a lot of really pleasant experiences exploring the city with a particular emphasis on its playgrounds. I'll chalk some of it up to the beautiful summer weather (and by that I mean 60s & 70s) but Victoria is very high on my list of cities and before we even headed for home I was investigating the Victoria Clipper, a zippy passenger ferry that leaves from downtown Seattle.
Our Airbnb was sold out from under us but we lucked out that there was a hotel room right across the street from the Parliament complex. Most importantly, it was a corner room with two balconies for keeping an eye on the equine traffic:
As mentioned at the top, William Prince was performing the night we arrived. This was an awesome bit of serendipity that we discovered upon arrival but it was a late start so as the only one who knew who he was, I got to go! When he finally finished, I floated back to the hotel and figured the trip was already a success.
August 29, 2022: We started off the day with a walk to Beacon Hill Park for their goat stampede and we did not leave until every goat had been snuggled (which proved exhausting for the little guy, see below). For the afternoon we headed to Holland Point Park but honestly any waterfront along the south side of the city comes with plenty of rocks to toss and views of the Olympics back in WA. Then we wrapped things up with dinner at Fisherman's Wharf among the houseboats.
August 30, 2022: Day 3 saw us head a little further afield to visit the Esquimalt Lagoon and the adjacent Fort Rodd Hill/Fisgard Lighthouse. The fort in particular was a hit with lots of WWII bunkers for exploring but I have no pictures because they were zipping through and over at a literal breakneck pace.
For the afternoon we grabbed a ride in one of the water taxis that took us up the harbor to Halkett Island #2 for some sightseeing and seal spotting with Captain Dave. We opted to walk all the way back which sounded good at the time...
August 31st, 2022: I think we started off the day with a visit to the BC Museum but with no pictures to show for it, did it really happen?? I do remember struggling to keep up with the spider monkeys.
For the afternoon we headed to Caboro-Gyro Park to get up close an personal with sea monsters.
September 1st, 2022: We filled our last full day with more playgrounds and a walk out on the breakwater.
September 2nd, 2022: Just enough time for one more playground before driving onto the ferry and a returning to reality. But then our ferry couldn't depart because... Orcas!! In downtown Victoria! Probably hunting some of the same seals we saw from our water taxi and we had a great view of the pod from the deck of ferry.
Once on dry land, we picked up the hound from his deluxe boarding resort and grabbed our commuter ferry back to home territory.
